Georgia travel insurance: this guide explains the applicable rights, rules, documents and procedures using official sources.
Yes. Since 1 January 2026, foreign nationals entering Georgia as tourists must hold health and accident insurance covering their entire stay. The policy may be issued by an authorised Georgian or foreign insurer.
Minimum travel insurance requirements
- coverage of at least GEL 30,000;
- validity from entry until departure, for no more than one year;
- health and accident risks must be covered;
- a paper or electronic policy is accepted;
- the document must be in Georgian or English.
Can the policy be checked at the border?
Yes. An authorised Patrol Police officer may check the policy at a border checkpoint. Under Article 11 of Georgia’s Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons, absence of health and accident insurance may also provide a legal ground for refusing entry.
What must the policy show?
It should identify the parties, covered territory, insured subject, start and end time, risks, insured amount and limits, premium and payment terms. Confirm that Georgia and every travel date are expressly covered.
Who is exempt?
Exemptions include specified diplomatic or special visa and passport holders, accredited diplomatic and international-organisation staff and family members, persons covered by international agreements, and drivers engaged in international freight or passenger transport.
